A nightmare, i would not recommend it, at least from my doctor

Smart Lipo: Was not worth it
Cost: $5,000
Pain: Severe
Satisfaction: Poor

So I try to get rid of this little muffin top that I have, but nothing is working. I don’t want to diet and lose weight anywhere except in that particular area. I have an injury to my low back, to the point that the disk at L5-S1 has degenerated to nothing at all, so excersizing that area is a lot more difficult for me then most people. I made an appointment to see doctor who was suppose to be a hot shot plastic surgeon in Scottsdale Arizona and he tells me I’m the perfect candidate for a procedure called Smart Lipo. He says its safe because I will be awake during the whole thing, and if something were to go wrong, like he accidentally touched my kidneys with this laser of his, that’s suppose to be melting away my fat, I will feel it and will stop him from doing that because it would hurt.

Had smartlipo today and feelin’ fine!

Smart Lipo: Was worth it
Cost: $6,000
Pain: Mild
Satisfaction: Very good

After reading the posts I was terrified when I got there this afternoon. I walked in and said "Can I take my Valium NOW?" They immediately put me at ease and I was surprised how well it went. I felt only minimal pain and that was only when they got too close to places that didn’t have the lidocaine. I think VelaShape hurt worse than this. Now granted, this is only 1 hour later and I know the Vicodin hasn’t worn off yet but I feel fine. I don’t like the seeping but have on old jammies and will just deal with it. I will update in a day or two and see if I’m still feeling positive about it. Thanks for all your posts, it was great to see such a wide variety of results and opinions. Natalie

Update on Day Two:
Had a bit of pain around 3am when the Vicodin wore off but took another one and was able to go back to sleep.  I am at work today, it’s tender but not unbearable.  I only took a half a Vicodin this morning and am doing just fine.  The leakage seems to have stopped and I have gauze just in case but think I will probably be able to remove it once I get home.  When I took off the compression garments to change the bandages this morning I was really pleased with what I saw…I have a waist!  I stand at work and I think that helps, the only time I’m uncomfortable is when I first try to sit.  Otherwise, so far, so good!

This photo is from the Day of and Four Days after SmartLipo.  The divets in my stomach are from a splenectomy and that is part of the reason I had such a battle with my mid-section.  Pockets of fat would pool around the scars and the result was awful.  Four days later I am very pleased.  I am very anxious for the final result but just seeing the progress!

So far so good, trying to have patience for final results of smart lipo…

Smart Lipo: Was worth it
Cost: $6,000
Pain: Uncomfortable
Satisfaction: Very good

I had Smart Lipo about two weeks ago on my upper/lower abs and flanks. The procedure was uncomfortable, but tolerable. I was awake the entire time, and talked the entire time, so much that I think my doctor wished he had given me more drugs! (I took xanax, benadryl, and a painkiller before surgery) The pain level was about what I expected- initial numbing hurts, then the laser and suction are uncomfortable, but not awful. I don’t even know how much fat they took out because I asked the doctor right afterwards but was so out of it that I forgot! But, I do know that it wasnt a lot. I started out at 125 lbs, 5’5, and am 35 years old- just wanted the extra flab off my middle and sides that I ended up with after years of not exercising, pregnancy, and decreased metabolism.
It took about 3 hours total- only about 2 for the doctor to laser and remove the fat.
Immediately after the surgery my stomach was very flat, looked like when I was 21. Bruised, and very sore and draining from incisions (only 4) but flat!
I went home and slept all afternoon, ate dinner, took some painkillers and slept well that night. The draining stopped the next day and though I was sore, didnt feel too bad.
The second day swelling started and my garment was very uncomfortable, awful. Now at day 17 I still have swelling, but less. Unfortunately my stomach looks just a little better than before the surgery! I have to assume at this point that it is just swelling, and am trying to have patience but there’s a little part of me that wonders if the doctor took out enough fat… He tells me to wait for 6 months, and from what I’ve heard from others that have had Smart and traditional lipo it really does take that long to see the results. And, though I am a little anxious, I do have a lot of confidence in my doctor. He’s been doing Smart Lipo since it was approved, has literally done hundreds, and had great references. He also had it done to himself by someone he trained, which made me feel very comfortable and safe.
So- I’m giving Smart Lipo a "yes. it’s worth it!" based on what I saw right after the surgery, and because the overall experience wasnt so bad. I would recommend a couple things: arnica and bromelian really do help with swelling and especially bruising; take as much time off work and kids as possible – you won’t feel like doing anything for a week, and I think I’m recovering quickly because I got a lot of rest; and, take photos before, AND right after surgery! I didnt and really wish I had because then I could look at them now and remind myself of how great it looked before the swelling started.
I will definitely update my review in the coming months and also look forward to hearing about everyone else’s experiences.

Smartlipo-the jury is out??? still waiting

Smart Lipo: Was worth it
Cost: $6,200
Pain: Mild
Satisfaction: Good

Had smart lipo July 3 on flanks, abdomine and inner thighs. I was put under general which was fine with me. I actually prefered it and it did not bother me at all. I leaked for 12 hours and wore compression garment for 2 weeks. I am now in a stage two garment. I have a small lump in left thigh, but continue to massage. I went in 5 days post op and was told 3-6 months to see results. I had 900 cc removed which they said was a lot for me? The more I read, the more I realize that it doesn’t sound like much was taken out. I can see that my stomach has gone down but my love handles are still big and my inner thighs are still touching. I thought by 3 weeks I would have my clothes fitting looser, but they are not. I will continue to wear this garment 23/7 until my next visit. I am hoping that this was not all for nothing. I would hate to have to go through this again.
Updated on Jul 29, 2008:
follow-up visit today, July 29.  Saw my PS today re: a lump in my thigh and continued numbness in flank and upper calf area.  He was concerned that the lump might be a blood clot, thankfully after an ultrasound it is just a scar tissue mass.  He had me do the cold laser treatment again today and I must say, the lump is already smaller.  I can feel some pain, but it’s the healing type of pain, if that makes sense.  I have noticed that my stomach and legs are getting smaller, but the flank area is still the same as before the surgery.  I’m still going to be patient and see what happens at the end of August, when I go in again.

Having tremendous difficulty with smartlipo on thighs

Smart Lipo: Was not worth it
Cost: $4,800
Pain: Severe
Satisfaction: Poor

On July 11th I had smart lipo done on my inner thighs/knees. The procedure took about 2.5 hours and was painful but bearable. I went home around noon and i had some drainage until about 9 p.m. that evening. I had moderate black and blue bruising the first day, but it had disappeared by the very next morning. It was replaced with redness – the kind of redness you get from being burned after falling asleep in the sun for 8 hours. The area is red, extremly hard – my thighs feel like a brick. In addition, the area has swollen up, but the majority of swelling has concentrated right around the knees. It makes it mega tough to bend my leg or have any movement. Walking, stairs, and shift of leg position ends up hurting a great deal. I can deal with the soarness, but the swelling and redness is really making me miserable. I have to walk in very slow motion and it’s extremly painful. I went back to the Doc 5 days after my procedure and he wasn’t sure what was going on. Because the area is so red, hard, and hot (you could fry a steak on my thigh right now), he thought it may have gotten infected. But there are no other signs of infection…I don’t have a temperature or a fever. He gave me extra antibiotics to use in case of infection. He also told me to apply heat to the area whenever I could – like a heating pad or hot towel. I had been using ice since it was red and swollen, but he said to apply heat. I’ve been doing that and taking the extra antibiotics. He also gave me diuretics to reduce the swelling. Finally, he told me not to wear the compression garment anymore. While the compression garment is supposed to help, in my case, he thinks it hurt me. I’m pretty short and the garment was bunching up around my knees, which possibly cut off circulation and caused swelling. I’ve done everything that he recommended 3 days ago but I still have no relief. The pain, redness, swelling, and toughness of the area is no longer tolerable. It hurts really bad and not being able to walk or move has basically handicapped me. Has anyone experienced anything like this, or does anyone have any advice for me?

Vaser/smart lipo

Smart Lipo: Was worth it
Cost: $3,500
Pain: Mild
Satisfaction: Very good

I had Vaser/Smart Lipo 6 weeks ago. They melted the fat, suctioned it out and then used a laser (smart lipo) to tighten the skin. I had my upper and lower abs done. I’ve always had a pot belly and it just got worse after two c-sections. When I got home from the proceedure I looked in the mirror and my stomache was flat. I weighed 129 pounds the day of the surgery and 123 pounds three days after. I was told not to exercise for 4 weeks. I went to a spin class after two. When I took a shower that night I had a lump on my stomache where I had bent over the bike. It went away after a few days. I am happy with the results. My stomache is not as flat as it was right after the surgery. It seems to get a little bumpy as the day goes on. I did not need to take the pain meds prescribed at all. I just felt very tight for a few weeks. I still wear the garment 24 hours. The longer you wear it the better I was told. I also use mederma on the four incisions and it works wonders. I even used it on my old section scar and it’s starting to fade.

Smart lipo works

Smart Lipo: Was worth it
Cost: $9,000
Pain: Painfree
Satisfaction: Excellent

I had my upper/lower abs, and love handles done about 12 weeks ago. I have lost over 4 inches, and can see a remarkable improvement in my waist line, as well as my skin is much tighter.
I would recommend this to all my friends, and plan on getting my chest done soon.
